xmlfy is a command line utility to convert text/UTF-8 based output into XML formatted output using a schema file. It also supports a basic version of a schema configuration allowing you to control the format of the XML output by supplying a schema file as an option. Here is the syntax: $ xmlfy input.txt output.xml --schema=schema.xsd --syntax=Pair --schema=schema.xsd, --syntax=Pair, --schema=schema.xsd --syntax=Pair What I want to do: Read text from an input file and write text to an output file When text is written to the output file it should be in XML format as shown below using schema (and optional style). Hello, World. From this thread I tried to use cat to write text from an input file to the output file. If I use cat input.txt > output.xml Then the output file is not XML formatted and the line breaks are not displayed, when using cat input.txt | xmlfy --schema=schema.xsd --syntax=Pair The line breaks do not seem to be displayed. A: The solution I found was to use a pipe as follows: $ cat input.txt | xmlfy --schema=schema.xsd --syntax=Pair --output=output.xml The thing is I have to use a pipe as there is no option for a command line switch in the syntax for xmlfy. @tomas comment suggested using a sed command. This does the same thing but in a one line command. $ cat input.txt | xmlfy --schema=schema.xsd --syntax=Pair --output=output.xml | sed -e's/^.*.*$//' I don't think sed is the best method to do this, as there will be issues with tabs and other characters that may break up the output. If anyone can suggest a better way to do this please add an answer
